What Are Signs of Oral Cancer?

November 16, 2022 7:00 pm

We know that anything to do with “cancer” can seem frightening but taking the time to understand a bit more about what signs you should look out for could wind up saving your life. We’ll stick to talking about oral cancer specifically since that is our area of expertise as dental professionals. Here are some of the common oral cancer symptoms to keep in mind so if you start to experience any of them, you can get treatment as soon as possible.

The Visual Cues

Oral cancer can present itself visually in a variety of ways. Red or white patches in your mouth, rough spots on your lips, gums or cheeks, and unusual lumps or bumps are all considered signs of oral cancer.

Certain Types of Pain

Other signs of oral cancer include feeling pain in certain areas of the mouth. Persistent soreness in your throat, tenderness around the face and neck, and pain in your ear or jaw could all be related to oral cancer.

Difficulty with Movement

Another way that oral cancer can reveal itself is if you have difficulty moving your mouth. This may be particularly noticeable when opening and closing your jaw while chewing or speaking, and during swallowing.

Other Common Signs of Oral Cancer

Have you noticed that your teeth don’t really seem like they’re fitting together the way they always have before? Have you experienced a significant amount of weight loss that you can’t attribute to anything else? Is there bleeding in your mouth even if you didn’t just get an injury? All of those could be signs of oral cancer.
